VINTAGE AFRO-BRAZILIAN SILVER PENCA DE BALANGANDAN AMULET BROACH W/ (8) CHARMS

An incredible vintage Afro-Brazilian penca de balangandan silver amulet with brooch back and chain. Penca de balangandan were worn by female slaves of African descent in Brazil and were believed to bring good fortune on their wearer, as well as protect against evil spirits and impart fertility. This particular example features eight (8) charms, including a cocoa pod, piece of corn, and reticulated fish. Measures approx. 1.5"l x 2.5"w (closer to 5.75"l including chain and charms). Total weight approx. 47g/1.6oz. Displays general wear from age, including tarnish, light surface scratches, and some bends in the pin - see photos. A few charms may also be missing elements (we suspect one missing element is a wooden fist). Hinged bar holding charms can be opened and closed, secures with screw key.
