A fine Regency twin fusee bracket clock striking and repeating the hours in a brass inlaid and ornamented mahoghany case with white painted dial and convex glass in a brass bezel Thomas Earnshaw of LondonThis clock is the subject of an article in the July 2020 issue of Clocks Magazine This is a high-quality clock with chamfered top, quarter round brass mouldings, lancet frets, finely chased cornucopia handles and an equally fine pineapple finial. The clock has its original unaltered movement of standard form with plain backplate. The case retains much of its patina, and the dial has been repainted to a high standard, in the correct style. The letter “B” is cast into the inside of the backplate ,but almost erased by subsequent the scraping and polishing of the plate. Similarly, the name SPEAR” is cast into both movement retaining brackets. These inscriptions most likely identify the either the foundries, or the material dealers who supplied the castings for this clock. Most significantly, partially obscured by a run of the original dial ground paint, the original instruction to the dial painter is written in pencil. This gives the name which he was instructed to paint on this dial: “Earnshaw”, confirming the authenticity of the restored dial signature.Thomas Earnshaw was a watchmaker and is generally regarded as one of the pioneers of chronometer development. He also made regulators, including two for Armagh Observatory. Thomas’s son (also Thomas) took over the business at 119 High Holborn upon his father’s death in 1829. moving to Fenchurch street and trading there until around 1850. Thomas’s grandson (again Thomas) subsequently specialised in the manufacture of compensation balances.A significant number of fine regulators, chronometers and watches survive made or retailed by the Earnshaws between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries, but less than a dozen bracket clocks. The movement is in highly original condition and has been professionally serviced. It retains its original pendulum and holdfast screw, but is missing the holdfast block, which can be re-instated at no extra cost if required. The case is in good original condition having been restored and the silk fret linings replaced in recent years.
