Rare PreColumbian Early Period JamaCoaque Shaman Transformation Mask c.500-100BC.Rare Pre-Columbian JamaCoaque Pottery Mask, Early Horizon c.500-100BC./BCE Shaman Transformation JamaCoaque Culture, Regional Development Period c. 500 BC/BCE - 500 AD/CE, and to the earlier horizon of that period, c.500-100 BC/BCE; Northern Manabi Province, Ecuador.For whatever reason or reasons, objects of material culture from this early horizon of the JamaCoaque are comparatively much rarer than those from later periods, and that identifiable culture or 'tradition' thrived for another thousand years until the Spanish conquest in 1531.The later horizon has been well defined by the material culture extant, and categorized as the 'four phases of occupation' (although another chronology sees three) of the 'Jama Coaque Tradition' which is appropriate.Although Jama Coaque masks even during this early period almost invariably portray the Shaman in a phase of Transformation as portrayed here in this mask -evidently transforming into the 'Were-Jaguar', the first widespread 'religion' or belief system in the America, before the imposition of Christianity by the Spanish Conquerors- the masks of the early horizon are distinctly different than later ones: (a) are almost invariably round; (b) of simplified detail, seemingly crude by comparison to later works;(c) often devoid of painting, the renowned post-firing coloration the Jama Coaque are noted for; (d) and unique to this horizon, the 'bulbous nose' as seen here on this example. For what meaning or significance - if any - this particular iconography was used is open to conjecture.Made from a grayish clay more similar to later Tumaco LaTolita work than their own later work, and low fired thence by one definition a terracotta; this Rare and remarkable early Jama Coaque Shaman Transformation Mask shows extensive root marks as testimony to its age and is completely intact without any repairs or restorations.Approximately 4.5" x 4.75" - 11.43cm. x 12.cm.Ex- Harold J.
