RARE BAHIA TRIBAL CULTURE PROTECTIVE CARVED FROG/TOAD AMULET STONE BEAD 500 B.C.+
This is an ancient example of a Bahia Tribal Culture protective amulet bead.
The design of the bead is Frogs/Toads head with typical Bahia designs rear upper half.
The Frogs/Toads head has two bulging eyes in the Bahia style, the bead is grooves around the middle forming the mouth but also suggests a practical use possibly a spindle whorl.
The base of the stone carved bead plain and slightly larger in diameter than the top.
The bead is large and very tactile. If you are looking for a very special bead to add to your collection do not miss this one as I have not seen another!
It would have been worn by an individual of status.
Interestingly this early Ecuadorian people have recently been linked with the people of Easter Island through their similar artwork some experts speculating the artefacts could date back 10,000 years?
It has an excellent provenance.
Originally Property of a Cambridgeshire lady; formerly in the Igor Karmiloff collection (1925-2016), UN economist and author of Flashbacks, Icons of Impermanence, Bloomington, 2009; acquired in the 1950s
Size 20.57 mm in diameter and 15.00 mm high approximately.
In fine solid condition, no repair or restoration.
