Large Antique Mahogany Victorian Wardrobe - 1800s
This large antique Victorian wardrobe, which we understand dates from the 1800s, it’s made of solid dark mahogany wood, with mirrored doors and some beautiful detail all around the wardrobe.
It consists of one section with ten wooden drawers and a double-width hanging section which also includes two high-level shelves and a large deep drawer with shelf above. There are also two large hidden storage areas at the top, within the cornice (might be suitable for extra blankets / bedding).
This is a very large wardrobe which we bought only recently but discovered it was too large when we’d finished putting it together. So, please check the dimensions carefully to ensure it will fit your space. Dimensions (including the overhanging cornice) are:
Maximum width is: 259cm
Depth:76cm
Height: 240cm
The wardrobe has been carefully dismantled and is ready for collection and I’m happy to work with your courier and help them to load the pieces if necessary. Naturally, you will need to reassemble the wardrobe yourself. Obviously, it doesn’t come with a nice set of Ikea-type assembly instructions, but I was able to assemble it within a day from the photos supplied by the previous owner, as shown in the listing. (It does need two people to assemble it safely, given the size and weight of the pieces).
Condition Notes:
Please read these notes carefully. The wardrobe is in lovely condition for its age but there are various scratches, scrapes and other imperfections described below. This is not an exhaustive list, so please also look at the photos carefully.
There are scrapes and scratches in several areas, especially at the bottom where the doors have rubbed when closed (visible in the photos).
The shelf which holds the hanging rail is split (see photo) but does not affect the structural strength. You could repair it, swap it for the one above, or with the swap option, remove it completely to leaving a larger space above the shelf.
Three pieces of trim from the end panels are missing and a few are loose, needing to be glued. Replacements could be obtained, but if the wardrobe will be positioned so only one end is visible, you could easily swap trim pieces to the end which will be most visible.
It’s important to ensure the upright sections are vertical before fitting the back, to ensure the doors fit correctly. We’ve noticed that the gap around the doors when closed is not even (presumably someone has planed the doors previously, to prevent them from sticking). We don’t think it’s very noticeable but, again, please see photos.
There is a mechanism visible in the top right of the right-hand section (above top shelf) which we think was previously linked to a light (i.e. to turn on when door opened). This doesn't work and we removed the light fitting as we were unsure if it was safe.
