This auction is for a high quality brass cased carriage clock.This piece is marked as being made by the well collected maker J W Benson of 25 Old Bond Street London. He was clock / watch maker the Admiralty and he also held other Royal Warrants The clock is a repeater as you can see from the button on the top. The clock winds and works well, keeping very good time. The only fault is that when the repeater button is pressed the repreater mechanism rings on the the gong, but keeps ringing and does not stop until the chime spring is wound down. The mechanism will just need a service as it is obviously sticking . Just to sum up the clock is running very well and has a lovely chime but if you want to use the repeater function you will need to get the clock serviced.At my start price this clock represents excellent value as this is one of the best makers in my opinion, it looks and stands very well on the mantel shelf and for it to come in its original carry case with handle this is a real extra bonus.The clock has a serial nember stamped on the mechanism and also under the case, I have tried to date with the number but cannot find a data base.

The clock will date from the late 19th century or very early 20th century

This clock stands approx 5.25 inches tall and with the handle lifted up, just over 7 inches tall, measuring approx 4 inches across and 3.5 inches deep.The clock in its carry box box weighs just under 2.5 kg that is over 5.5 pounds in imperial weights

The clock has bevelled glass panels all the way around and an oval bevelled glass window on the top to show the mechanism. All these glass panels are in excellent condition with no chips or cracks etc.

The handle on the top is not the standard square shaped piece of brass but is shaped and sculptured to a give a more pleasing effect, it also folds down well, as shown.

The white enamel face is in excellent condition with no chips etc found. The figures are in bold easy to read Roman numeralsThe clock comes in a carry case as shown , this is original and has the Benson mark inside the lid

The clock weighs just a fraction under 2.5 kg, in imperial weights just over 5.3 pounds so is substantial piece, not a flimsy item.

The brass is in uncleaned, original patinated condition, I have not cleaned and shined the piece, as for many clients this reduces the appeal of the clock. If the purchaser wished to shine it after winning the item then I am sure it would clean up to a high gleam.

The clock is in working condition as stated above and is running well and keeping good time. The clock is key wound and comes with the key
