Brass faced grandfather clock by Thomas Birchall Nantwich.
This clock has been recently serviced and keeps good time with the date dial working correctly.
The overall height is7' 2” including 41/2” for the brass finials, which are not likely to be original but good quality.
The case consists of an oak cross banded base set on four ogee feet with a trunk which has wooden round columns with wooden caps and bases. The door is oak crossbanded with mahogany and a working lock and key.
The hood is plain oak with 2 round columns with gilded caps and bases with three good quality brass finials(not original, as mentioned) and brass knob with trunk door locking hook.( not operational at present).
The width across the feet is 21”, across the base box 19” and the trunk is 151/2”wide. The maximum width across the feet is 10" and the trunk is 7" wide.
The clock has good proportions and is not particularly wide.
The brass dial is 13”x19” to the arch with a silvered chapter ring, an internal date ring and seconds dial by Thomas Birchall Nantwich, which is engraved on the arch.
There are three steel period hands.
Thomas Birchall was a well known clock maker working from1755 to 1812 in Hospital st. Nantwich
The dial is in very good condition.
The movement has been recently serviced and is in full working order and keeps good time. The date wheel is working and the clock goes for 8 days.
The clock strikes the hours on a cast bell. It has an anchor escapement with two cast weights suspended from gut lines with 2 brass pulleys and has a pendulum with a brass bob and a winding key.
The dial and works appear to be original to each other and the seat board has not been replaced.
