Attractive oak and mahogany longcase clock circa late 18th century. The oak case which is in excellent condition for its age is enhanced with boxwood string and chequered inlays and conche shell inlay to the trunk door. The base is crossbanded in mahogany with chequered line inlay and is supported on bracket shaped feet. The arched hood has mahogany crossbandings to the glazed door with mahogany panels and bandings and boxwood line inlays to the swan neck pediment . Mahogany columns with brass capitals flank the hood and the pediment is enhanced with coloured wood inlaid roundels and brass ribbed ball finial. The overall height of the clock including finial is 7 feet 4 inchesThe 12 x 17 inch white painted dial is decorated with flowers to the spandrels and an exotic bird in the central area and incorporates a revolving painted moon phase in the arch with marine and pastoral scenes. Numbers and lettering are in good order and the dial is signed Young, Nottingham. W Young is recorded as working in Nottingham from 1795 to 1798 as a partnership and on his own until 1825.The 30 hour movement powers hour and minute hands and a calendar wheel. The moon phase wheel driven mechansism is in working order. Recently cleaned and serviced the movement is in working order, striking the hours on a bell and recording lunar phases and date.In all a very handsome clock, refer to photographs.
