DESCRIPTION: This is an extremely rare opportunity to purchase a GENUINE L & N. W. RAILWAY COMPANY fusee railway clock. The THIS IS NOT A REPRODUCTION THIS IS AN AUTHENTIC FUSEE RAILWAY CLOCK. The London and North Western Railway (L&NWR) was a British railway company between 1846 and 1922. In the late 19th century, the L&NWR was the largest joint stock company in the United Kingdom. But in in 1923, it became a constituent of the London, Midland and Scottish (LMS) railway, and, in 1948, the London Midland Region of British Railways: the LNWR. When these railway companies changed it was generally the case that the clocks were re-painted with the new names therefore it is rare to see these original clocks which have survived with their original names. The clock is also signed with the clockmaker 'W.M WRAY BIRMINGHAM' who is listed in 'RAILWAY CLOCKS by Ian P. Lyman':'Wray, William & Son, earlier Hunt & Wray, later Wray Son & Perry, 38 New Street Birmingham; L&BTR, L&NWR, NP&FR' The case is made from mahogany which has some superb grain and is a wonderful color. The case has a wonderful patina which can only be gained through age. The dial this is a white dial marked out with Roman numerals and signed 'L & N. W. RY COMPY' and 'WM WRAY BIRMINGHAM'. The lettering to the dial has faded in places but the letters can be still read on the dial where is has left the impression of the letters as can be seen from the photographed. This has not been restored as we felt it was important to show the originality of the clock. The case also has a door to the base which is complete with it's lock and key then there is a further door to the right side which is held in place with a catch. When the movement needs to be accessed the catch is simply released to the side which then allows the pendulum to be hung easily. The movement itself is excellent being a single fusee movement. The front of the movement has the number '1428' and also the back of the pendulum has the same number '1428' both of which has been photographed. There are two small holes to the front of the case where the original number plaque will have been located. The clock is in good working order and is happily ticking away. The clock comes complete with it's winding key and pendulum. AGE: The clock maker is listed in 'Brian Loomes Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Volume 2' as 'WRAY. William. Birmingham. 1868-80'. DIMENSIONS: The approximate dimensions are: - 14 3/4 inches (37.5 cm) in diameter across the case - 6 inches (15 cm) deep - 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter across the dial CONDITION: With regards condition, the clock is in good condition, as can be seen from the photographs. The movement itself is excellent being a single fusee movement. The case is also in superb condition just minor marks commensurate with age. The lettering to the dial has faded in places but the letters can be still read on the dial where is has left the impression of the letters as can be seen from the photographed. There are also some knocks and chips to the dial. This has not been restored as we felt it was important to show the originality of the clock.. Please study photographs carefully as they form part of the description and condition, as what you view is exactly what you will receive.
