Antique French 17 Century ‘Georgian’ Linen Cupboard Wardrobe Armoire Mahogany.

This was purchased for £1700 in 1999 from ‘The French House’ antiques dealer in York, as a 17th century mahogany French armoire/ linen cupboard. The drawer at the bottom was reconstructed in matching wood by the French house, as the original had been lost.

Although we had strong shelving fitted inside (see the photograph for the enormous amount of storage, it takes), the hanging rail at the top of the cupboard is still in place, so it can be used as a clothes hanging wardrobe if preferred.

This is a really beautiful piece of furniture with a lovely colour. It was much admired in our previous house but is simply too big for our new property. It shows all of the signs of its age with various scratches and marks from long ago, all part of the patina and polish.

The drawer front has snapped off after 20+ years of daily use and will need to be repaired.

There is historic wood worm which was treated before we bought it but I suspect there are some superficial patches of new worm that will best be treated after it is bought from us. I’ve tried to show the paler slightly dusty bits along the edges of the legs etc.
